The re-emergence of the popularity of grid systems, in web and print design, harkens back to the advertising design of Josef Müller-Brockmann. Müller-Brockmann began his career in the 1930′s, perfecting the Swiss Grid System and clearly defining his work as an artform unto itself. More interesting to me is his use of positive and negative space, almost Gestalt-like, with backgrounds and foregrounds melding into one another.
Unicorn Graphics has established an on-line museum with an extensive collection of wood type for viewing by the general public. Among the most noted wood type manufacturers in this collection are Wm. H. Page & Co., Vanderburgh, Wells & Co. and Hamilton Mfg. Co. This collection is a must-see for any typography enthusiast.

Kudos to the team at Winsper in Boston for a brilliant ad campaign for Stihl products. Above is one of the magazine ads which is part of the campaign, with great copy highlighting the bad economy. It’s rare in today’s advertising marketing, with tighter and tighter budgets, to actually write briliiant copy for such a visually-based ad that will only be blown away. See more ads after the link.
